Rather Heath
Directions
Catch a tench mission here
This five acre shallow lake under the control of Windermere, Ambleside and District Angling Association, holds a terrific head of tench and provides some really good sport early in the year. Tench averaging 3 lb are the main target species here and the pole or waggler combination fished in conjunction with corn or caster works a treat. It’s possible to catch 12 to 15 tench in a session with individual fish reaching 4 lb. Also stocked are bream, roach, rudd, carp and gudgeon. The bream respond well to a small groundbait feeder cast towards the middle of the lake with a hook bait of caster, red maggot or worm. Don’t over do the groundbait as there is a restriction of 1 kilo of dry mix per angler. For good bags of smaller roach, gudgeon and rudd, waggler fishing in the margins over loosefed maggot is a good method to try. For the bigger carp try surface fishing on warm days or a bottom bait near to over-hanging trees and bushes.
The right route
Take junction 36 off the M6 and follow the signs for Windermere on the A590, which eventually becomes the A591. Three-quarters-of-a-mile after the roundabout take a left turn into Rather Heath Lane signposted for Crook. The fishery is situated on the right hand side of the road.

Green’s Lane Ponds Lydiate, Liverpool
Directions
Winter pole fishing
The ponds are close to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in Green’s Lane, Lydiate, with a record of providing good fishing. The fishery is just over three-quarters of an acre and is an extension of a very old marl pit where clay was dug out to line the canal when it was first built. It has been open as a day ticket water for three years and is stocked with carp to 20Ib, tench to 41b, bream 5Ib, roach, perch and crucian carp. Many anglers use pole tackle but the rod, reel and runningline can be more effective and cope with the fact that big fish appear in the margins, If you do use pole tackle have the extension ready to slip on quickly! It’s a proven fact that many of the bigger fish at Green Lane Ponds come from the reed-fringed margins where the water is about two feet deep going out to about five feet. Perch can be caught almost every cast with floatfished red maggot but when the tench and bream are being targeted the better baits are caster, corn and bread.
The right route
From the A59 at Maghull take the A5147 Southport Road through Lydiate. Watch for the Scotch Piper Pub on the left then take next right at the Church into Hall Lane. Bear left at the Y junction (Eager Lane), cross over canal and ponds are signposted 100 yards on right.

mainline and 31b hooklength. The water has been divided into two sections and the lower stretch, below Glaxo bridge, has been stocked with over 4000 roach and fishes well in winter. There is also a large head of bream and these are usually caught from pegs 130 to 150.

LANCASTER CANAL SALWICK. LANCASHIRE
Directions
A noted fish-holding hotspot, this section has a good reputation for bream that average 41b. There are nine pegs available on the basin itself and all have produced great
results. Locals fish caster at 9-10 metres on pole and use hemp for the roach to 1 lb. In the summer it pays to take a lot of feed as the fish here tend to take some ‘filling up’! The bream run to 41b and 20 lb bags are by no means unusual. There are also good numbers of double figure pike that remain relatively untouched.
THE RIGHT ROUTE
Follow the A583 from Preston towards Lytham. At the A584 junction take the road on the right towards Salwick. Go past the Windmill pub and turn right past the Smiths Arms. Follow the road for 700 yards and parking is available close to the canal.

LEEDS-LIVERPOOL CANAL LYDIATE, MERSEYSIDE
Directions
This is a consistent stretch, controlled by Liverpool DAA, which fishes well throughout the year, especially for the roach. Hemp is by far the best bait for the roach, even in winter. It is best to fish to features, like the barges, which offer shelter for the fish. Feed bread first, with a steady stream of hemp over the top as this gives the roach time to accustom themselves to the hemp. When it’s cold feeding becomes critical - overfeeding and you’ll kill your swim. A little liquidised bread is all that is needed to keep the fish interested. Fishing with bread punch calls for 0.08mm mainline to 0.06mm hooklength, with a size 22 hook. For hemp you should fish with a single grain on a size 18 hook. Shot should be spread out evenly to allow the bait to fall naturally through the water. THE RIGHT ROUTE
From the end of the M57, near Litherland, take the A5147 northwards, towards Southport. The road runs parallel to the canal and parking is available in Lydiate.
Day tickets Season ticket only. Prices are £17 for seniors, £6 for juniors and £8 for OAP’s, all available from local tackle shops

LEEDS-LIVERPOOL CANAL HASKAYNE, LANCASHIRE
Directions
This is a prolific area of the Leeds-Liverpool canal providing great sport throughout the year. Bream average 21b and the roach can be caught to 1 lb 8oz. Seeking out pegs with moored boats and far bank features is a must as these make great fish-holding areas. The bream love brown crumb laced with casters, introduced at the beginning of a session only. If you want to bag up with the bream then location is paramount. A good tip for finding where they are is to watch the local match results in the papers and see where they are being caught. You do need to fish quite light for the big bream as they have wised-up to thick lines and large hooks - 1.1 lb hooklengths and size 20 hooks are called for. THE RIGHT ROUTE
Haskayne is just west of Ormskirk and can be reached via the B51 95 from Ormskirk Parking is available close to the canal.
Day tickets Season ticket only. Seniors £14, Juniors £5, available from local tackle shops
