| Burton Mere |
|
| Chance of a big eel
There are three lakes to choose from on this complex and they are Burton Mere, Woodland Lake and Willow Lake. Willow Lake is the smallest at about two acres in size. Burton Mere and Woodland Lake are joined by a small channel and are both approximately four acres in size. All three waters hold a similar stock of quality mixed species. Burton Mere is probably the more fished venue and in recent seasons has gained a good reputation for quality carp and catfish fishing. Carp to 32 lb and cats to 25 lb are present and will both respond to a variety of methods. For the carp, a boilie bait such as Active-8 fished over a small bed of pellets is a good method. Many of the lake’s catfish are caught on squid baits, legered near to an underwater feature. Other species present are tench, perch, bream and large eels which have been caught to 6 lb. Pole and waggler will account for good nets of tench and bream, fishing with a maggot or caster hook bait. A groundbait feeder with a caster and worm hook bait will also catch bream when fished to a range of 30 yards or more. Some of the top pegs are on the pads at Burton Mere, peg 1 on Woodlands and peg 25 on Willow. |
The right route

| Bridgewater Canal |
|
| Odd carp on caster
The cut is around 15 metres wide with ledges on both near and far bank. The centre of the track is around five feet deep and holds a good head of different species including skimmers, roach, carp, tench and eels. The main method here is to fish the long pole across on the far ledge for the better quality fish on the caster. On the inside line there are plenty of skimmers and roach which can be caught on whip or pole tactics. The middle of the canal offers the chance of a better tench and bigger bream on caster or maggot baits. For good nets of perch, chopped worm fed close to the middle is a good ploy. For roach sport try feeding and fishing squatts on the waggler line at three-quarters of the way across the canal. Odd larger carp have also been caught here and will respond to caster or corn baits. |
The right route
From junction 7 on the M63 follow the A56 and take the left fork at the next roundabout. Follow the road on and then turn right at the third set of traffic lights into Davyhulm Road. Take the next left into Moss Road (Trafford Angling Supplies is on the corner). Park here and walk into what was a parking area on the right. Turn left along the canal under Moss Road bridge. | Harthill Pools |
|
| This is a really picturesque venue that has three pools on offer to the day ticket angler. It’s a popular venue with both match and pleasure anglers. It’s a well established and well stocked fishery offering every chance of a 100 lb plus bag of fish if you fish it right. The Main Pool is the most popular pool and local anglers have taken big bags of mainly carp and tench from here. The top method is the pole with worm or meat for hook bait, fished over a bed of pellets. Canal pool is in the middle of being restocked so it is best to ask if the water is open before fishing. The Rock Pool at the back of the complex is also a good mixed fishery and offers similar sport to the Main Pool. Other species you can expect to catch are roach, skimmers, rudd and perch. Good weights of smaller fish can be caught on the waggler from the marginal areas by drip feeding maggots on a little-and-often basis, with caster or maggot on the hook. The groundbait feeder will also account for bream and tench. | The right route
From Chester follow the A41 to Broxton and at the roundabout follow the A534 towards Nantwich. Follow the road past the Dunham Esser public house and at the crossroads turn left into Boldswater Hill Road. The entrance to the fishery is on the right three-quarters-of-a-mile on down the road.
