| Fendrod Lake |
|
| Top class sport on the pole
The fishing on this 15 acre lake is controlled by Brynmill and District Angling Club and is situated right in the heart of an industrial estate. All species of coarse fish are present and due to natural fertility of the water, in ever increasing numbers. Whilst dace and rudd feature strongly in nets, bream and tench to 6 lb plus roach and rudd to over 2 lb have been caught. There is in fact a chance of catching a 3 lb roach here. For the more serious carp angler there are a number of carp which are around the 20 lb mark and a 30 lb carp is on the cards. For the smaller fish pole is the favoured method although waggler and feeder do also produce good sport. Whatever your chosen method most of the fish including the carp are usually caught close to the marginal weed. Fishing is most productive when the water has a little colour in it and the fish tend to follow the wind. Maggot, caster and sweetcorn are considered to be the best baits. |

| Hendre Lake |
|
| Caster and corn are the key
Controlled by Cardiff Nomads Angling Club, the lake is rated one of the best fisheries in the area. Well established and situated on the edge of the city, it’s fed by an old canal which runs in at one end and out of the other. Fairly shallow with an average depth of three feet, it’s well stocked with a variety of fish. This water is famous for its large head of roach which run between six ounces and 2 lb. and nets of 20 lb plus are common. There are also a large number of tench between three and five pounds and similar sized bream are also present. Quality perch are also stocked as are carp which run to over 20 lb. Top baits here are maggots, caster, corn and meat. Carp specialists do well on boilied baits in a variety of flavours. Local anglers fishing here favour a waggler or pole fishing approach. Most of the fish are caught in the deeper channel which is around five feet. A groundbait feeder also works well for the tench and bream when the conditions are choppy. |
The right route
From the A48 approaching Cardiff turn left into Cypress Drive at the first big roundabout. Keep following the road for approximately 1.5 miles and watch out for the signs to the lake on the left-hand-side. Fact file

| Hazelcourt Ponds, Llysworney, Wales |
|
| Eels to 5lb
The fishery comprises six small ponds with extremely productive fishing. Whilst the predominant target species are the various strains of carp which include Italian mirrors, koi and ghosties, tench and golden rudd. A fishery record eel of 5lb 8 oz has also been recorded. The waters fish well throughout the year with most baits being productive, however, meat, corn and trout pellets often pick up the better quality fish. A method feeder with pellet paste laced with meat and corn can be a deadly method. For good catches of smaller rudd and tench, try float fishing with a waggler. Pole is also effective for the tench and carp with maggot and caster baits. There is good access to the pools thus making them suitable for the less mobile angler and youngsters. Small matches can be arranged by appointment. |
The right route
Travelling from Cardiff on the A48. bypass Cowbridge and approximately one mile after the Cowbridge by-pass ends take a left turn onto the B4268 at Pentre Meyrick cross-roads. The fishery is on the right-hand-side of the road before you reach Llysworney. Factfile
